An online or virtual community is a social network of individuals who interact through a specific website to pursue mutual interests or goals. Online communities can be a supplemental form of communication for organizations who already have a real life structure. The online community members communicate using forums, blogs, twitter-like status updates or in discussions in groups. Each user has their own profile, avatar and wall. You can create groups, invite friends, send private message and comment on walls and share photos.

Online communities can be used for a variety of social and professional groups interacting via the Internet. There can either be a strong real life connection in place or people may not know each other and only have weak ties on the community.
